Time to pick out some Olympic weightlifting plates for your garage gym? What kind do you buy? Rubber bumper plates or steel plates? Where should you get them? Should you buy new plates, or should you seek out used bumper plates? Are they expensive to ship, or competitive prices for inspection should you expect free shipping? I've been through all this myself. I've done all of the research already for my garage gym but I'm going to do it all over again for this article. So let's see if I can make purchasing some Olympic plates easier for you guys and gals.

What are Bumper Plates?

Bumper plates (or just bumpers) are Olympic weightlifting plates, typically made of rubber, so that a loaded bar can be safely dropped without damaging either the plates or the lifting platform (or simply the floor in most home and garage gym situations). Bumpers are available in both pounds and kilograms in the same weight variety as normal cast iron or steel weightlifting plates. Competition bumper plates are color coded by weight, while training bumpers are normally just black.

Bumper Plates or Steel Plates?

So do you choose bumper plates or classic steel/cast iron plates? Well that depends. If money is really tight, steel weights might be the way to go. With so many folks these days utilizing Olympic lifts in their workouts (even Crossfit uses the clean and the snatch), it makes sense to just go for the bumper plates initially so those lifts are an option for you later Factory acceptance test, even if you're fitness level doesn't necessitate them right away.

There is another reason so many prefer bumper plates over steel. It may seem a little silly, but for those who have worked out with steel (or still do) you will understand. It's the noise. Steel is crazy loud on the bar. Even on relatively smooth movements, those giant plates banging against each other is definitely loud. When you let that bar down from even a few inches above the ground or rack, it's loud as hell. Bumpers don't clang and bang like that. Just something else to consider.

There has been so much talk circulating about harmful chemicals found in sport glass bottles and in cans. Scientists have not yet been able to establish the facts about this issue, but you can take some preventive measures to protect the health of your family. 1. Choose brick cartons instead of cans.

This article has demonstrated that the early methods of QoS in IP networks such as TCP flow control and FIFO buffers are not adequate for today's high speed Internet applications. Better methods of QoS are necessary to support real time applications such as video and voice over IP.
There are three levels of QoS: best effort, differentiated service test for machining centerand guaranteed service. Best effort provides no QoS protocols other than TCP flow control and can only be used for bursty IP traffic that is not time sensitive such as email and web browsing. Differentiated service classifies and prioritizes traffic flows so that higher priority traffic has precedence in the network. Examples of differentiated service methods are PBR, CAR, IP precedence, PQ and DiffServ. The guaranteed service level of QoS provides the best QoS by reserving resources throughout the network for high priority traffic flows. Examples are RSVP and IntServ. Guaranteed level of service can only be provided when the network has adequate bandwidth to support the traffic.

Implementing Layer 2 QoS is very effective when a single system administrator controls the network. The 802.p standard provides a method for classifying and prioritizing traffic using the MAC address machining check and layer 2 switches. With VLAN, virtual circuits can prioritize traffic and establish a high level of QoS. However these methods are not applicable when the IP network is the global Internet and public sites must be accessed.

The future of the Internet will depend on effective quality of service (QoS) methods. To support future real-time applications over the global Internet, reliable transmission methods will be needed along with the ability to classify and prioritize traffic on an end to end basis. The QoS methods described in this paper provide a framework for implementing QoS within IP networks. THE BOTTLES

The first step is to get the cool water bottles. You can use either plastic bottles or glass bottles for your message in a bottle invitation. We purchased glass bottles for our invitations as we only needed 25. These came with the corks and we bought mailing boxes with them. You can also get 8oz. plastic bottles in bulk, if you want to save some money. The plastic bottles also come with corks, but you don't need boxes to mail them.

THE SAND

If you buy sand in 5 lb bags, each bag will fill about 150 bottles with about 2" of sand. Or, if you are really determined, you can head on down to the beach! If you do want to "dig your own," be aware that it might be too damp and will stick to the sides of the bottle. If this happens, dry the sand in an oven before filling the insulated water bottles. The sand will have a nice powdery appearance, rather than being wet and clumpy.

THE PAPER

I do not recommend using a stiff style of paper and you'll see why further down. I searched far and wide for paper that either had burned edges or appeared to have burned edges. I didn't want it to look cheap. Through the research I figured out I wanted to burn the edges myself and that the best paper to use for this is parchment paper. I searched and priced everywhere. The best I found was actually at Office Depot. I got 80 sheets of parchment paper for under $7.00. It has a wonderful texture and was very easy to work with. Keep in mind that you cannot print on this particular paper on both sides because of the consistency of it. It is also available to buy in larger packages than 80 sheets.

BURNING THE EDGES

I have to admit this part takes some practice.....but here is what I learned: I do not recommend using a lighter because it will leave black marks on the paper and a not so nice odor once its been closed up in a metal water bottles for a while. For the first set I did, I used the long fireplace matches and this worked pretty well. I lit an edge, let it burn for a few seconds and then blew it out. I repeated this technique until I had gone all the way around. This will leave you with some pretty rough edges with black soot all over them. I figured out early on that if you don't scrape it off you are going to have a mess and black stuff everywhere when you try and roll the scrolls up. I used the edge of the long match to scrape all the extra stuff off the edges. I did it over the kitchen sink, but you could do it over newspaper or outside. I also chose the kitchen because I was close to water in case I had trouble with the flames. We had a lot of burning to do since we did our scrolls, the invites on the outside of each bottle and the mailing labels. For the second set I decided to move on to an unscented candle and forego the long matches (truth be told I ran out of them). This worked well but I did get a little more soot and black marks on the back of the paper, but at that point I could live with it! ROLLING THE SCROLLS

Above I recommended NOT using a very stiff paper. At this point you'll be sorry if you did! This was my least favorite part of the process and I think it's because I wasn't very good at it. My fiance rolled all the scrolls. He started each one by rolling it around a pencil and working with it until it was tight enough to fit inside the stainless steel vacuum bottle. Once it was thin enough, I would tie it closed. A lot of girls use ribbon or raffia. I chose to use natural jute both because of the look of it (like rope but thin) and the price. I got 243 feet of 3 ply #28 natural jute from Hobby Lobby for $1.47 and I barely put a dent in it. To me - that's a deal!!

We are actually at war with cables as a result of the technological revolution in which the 1 gauge battery cable is proving to be quite an adversary by remaining an essential component of this progress in spite of the many design attempts to eradicate it from the face of the earth in favor of wireless connections. In the world today we are literally covered with cables that protrude like pet snakes around our head from headsets and earphones. We wrap them around our waists and legs in an attempt to get them out of the way whenever we use our laptops or other entertainment devices as though we're tossing back our hair. At work we may use various contraptions to enforce a kind of cable management in our work area but cables tend to outsmart these managers and make their way to our legs and ankles, entangling us in yet another frustratingly difficult attempt to free ourselves. Cables continue to plague us, pouncing on every opportunity to attack us by making fools of us, or by frustrating us to no end. All of this increases our stress level and shortens our lives. I think that cables are hell bent (pardon the pun) on destroying us and taking over the world because they are tired of us constantly reminding them that they are nothing but a bunch of dumb cables. I actually think cables are very smart, but subtle. I can't remember the last time that a cable was too dumb or inattentive to capitalize on an opportunity to tangle me up in its length. They are amazingly opportunistic, and never fail to make their presence known.

I have tried living without cables draped all over my body, like some kind of robot, in favor of wireless accessories but they are not cost effective today. Cables seem to know this and flaunt this advantage every chance they get. You will always find them out front at eye level in the retail stores while wireless accessories will be down around the knee level, if not lower, or perhaps not displayed at all. (I can imagine solar panel cable 4mm winding around some poor ole helpless wireless headset and snuffing the very life out of it somewhere back in the storage room.) When cables really want to get your attention and show you who's winning this war of attrition, they will suddenly develop an exposed crack on their surface just wide enough for a live wire to make contact with your skin, shorting the current through your body to ground. If this doesn't kill you, it will certainly get your attention, and cause you to never pick up a cable again in life. Of course the crack defies every speculation and theory you can come up with for how it got there. One night as I was watching the movie "Final Destination", I noticed that I kept stepping onto cables left on the floor as I was going back and forth to the room. I thought I had gotten them all up but every time I went out of the room I stepped onto another discarded cable as I came in. I couldn't figure out why or how all those cables got into the room I was watching the movie in. I'm still trying to figure that one out. (Wooouuuhhh ....)

Cables are also quite capable of disappearing. I can't remember how many times I have laid a cable down, and after wards looked right into the area I put it but saw nothing, only to suffer the humiliation of having someone return it to me with the mocking statement of, "Oh, it was right over there where you left it." I am beginning to see the benefit of this situation because it alone has robbed me of plenty of years I could have been here giving aerial bundled cables something to laugh about. I don't think I like cables much anymore.

One thing I have that cables don't have is my relationship with God, through his Son Jesus Christ. Unlike cables, I don't get all knotted up due to Murphy's Law, or any other law for that matter, because God has his own brand of law that governs my life. Unlike cables I am not destined to snag on things simply because I they are there. I don't have to bend if the pressures of life are pushing against me at both ends, nor do I necessarily break when I reach my breaking point. God allows me to have a knot-free journey regardless of the things that are trying to turn me this way and that. Unlike cables, when I come into contact with things that would try to ensnarl me, I pass through smoothly without getting entangled.

Cables do, however, experience a kind of resurrection, although technically it's referred to as recycling and can't be identified as the same cable it was before. This regeneration has been linked to its source of arrogance and pervasiveness but does little to make it a better cable. Recycling restores the life of the cable to a similar physical body, renewed in its longevity, but not as its original physical body.

However, the cable isn't in a live state until electricity is passed through it. That's when it is said to be live. I, on the other hand, will shed my original physical body and live on through my spiritual one, having no need for the electrochemical processes that once allowed electrical current to flow in my old body. Cables don't have spirits you know, but then they don't need them because they won't be going to Heaven. I think they know this, and this is why acsr wire size probably attack me, and people like me, more often because our lives are the very antithesis of what their life is. The life of a cable is how it can be for those who don't belong to God, through faith in Jesus Christ his Son. Everything that can possibly go wrong will go wrong.
